Freight Agents arrange for and track incoming and outgoing freight shipments by straight truck or tractor/trailer from their own home based offices. They expedite freight shipments by logistically arranging the pick up/delivery of truck load shipments and are responsible for preparing/tracking all necessary documents.
Agents receive load information from customers by way of pick ticket or load/rate agreement and arrange for the pickup of freight and its delivery to loading platforms and/or receiving yards by contract motor carrier. Freight agents may keep records and create documentation of a truck load shipment, including its amount, type, weight, dimensions, destination, and time of shipment. They keep a tally of missing items and record the condition of damaged items.
Freight Agents may negotiate service rates with shipping and carrier agents and in some cases may have to renegotiate agreed upon rates with either/both parties when circumstances dictate for additional costs, damages or loss of time. Freight Agents are responsible to ensure the delivery of brokered goods by truck from beginning to end according to agreed upon customer specifications and are expected to handle any customer service related issues that may arise.
